What is infrastructure as a service (IaaS)?
Infrastructure as a service, often simply referred to by its acronym "IaaS model" is a form of cloud computing that provides consumers with fundamental computing resources of processing, networking and storage on demand, and on a pay-per-use basis.
IaaS is one of four types of cloud service alongside software as a service (SaaS), platform as a service (PaaS) for example.
What are the benefits?
Infrastructure-as-a-Service offers numerous benefits that enable end-users to move forward faster and achieve their digital transformation goals.
-
Reduces capital expenditure and optimizes costs. IaaS eliminates the cost of configuring and managing a physical data center, making it a cost-effective choice for cloud migration. Pay-per-use also reduces hardware and maintenance costs.
-
Favors scaling and performance of IT workloads.
-
Increases stability, reliability and infrastructure support
-
Guarantees business continuity and disaster recovery
-
Improves security
How does IaaS work?
In a classic on-premise scenario, a company manages and maintains its own datacenter.
This company must invest in servers, storage capacity, software, hire IT staff or subcontractors to purchase, manage and upgrade all equipment and licenses and so on.
The datacenter must be designed to meet peak demand, even if workloads sometimes decrease and these resources remain idle.
In a traditional IaaS model, a company calls on a Cloud service provider to offer these services by hosting hardware and software in a "cloud infrastructure".
The company no longer needs to acquire and manage its own equipment, nor space to host that equipment, and the cost shifts to a pay-per-use model.
In fact when the company needs fewer resources, it pays less. Conversely, as it grows, it can commission additional computing resources and other technologies in a matter of minutes.
IaaS use cases
Companies use IaaS in a variety of ways:
With its pay-per-use model, IaaS makes high-performance computing (HPC) and other project-oriented tasks, which handle huge volumes of data, more affordable.
The cloud infrastructure enables separate test and development environments to be set up quickly. It's possible to experiment and test new ideas in isolation, or create common development environments for the whole team.
Organizations use cloud infrastructure to host high-performance, secure, scalable and fully customizable web applications to meet their content delivery needs.
Transferring these process infrastructures to the cloud helps companies cut costs and allows them to focus on other tasks.
What are the different types of IaaS solutions on the market?
IaaS is a Cloud service ideally suited to all business needs. There are three distinct types of solution:
