IBS: The premier event for smart buildings
Since its inception, Intelligent Building Systems (IBS) has established itself as one of France’s leading events dedicated to commercial, industrial, and multi-family buildings. Every year, it brings together manufacturers, integrators, operators, engineering firms, project owners, and digital experts to address challenges in connectivity, automation, IoT, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and energy efficiency.
Against a backdrop of increasingly stringent environmental and regulatory requirements, the discussions highlighted the central role of data and digital technologies in the sustainable transformation of buildings.
When Regulations, Energy Efficiency, and Artificial Intelligence Are Reshaping the Buildings of Tomorrow
At a conference held as part of the IBS trade show—a must-attend event for professionals in the Smart Building, Building Management Systems (BMS), automation, and energy efficiency, Denis Ardouin, Director of the Data & AI Division at Equans Digital in France, spoke alongside industry experts to discuss a topic of particular strategic importance for the future of buildings:“The Tertiary Sector Decree, the BACS Decree, and the Recovery Plan: the winning trio for a sustainable building?”.
This roundtable brought together several key players in the smart building ecosystem to share their insights on technological developments, new regulatory requirements, and the opportunities offered by the digital transformation of buildings.
Alongside recognised industry professionals, Denis Ardouin shared Equans Digital’s vision on the strategies for balancing regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and energy performance through the intelligent use of data.
Data and new technologies are transforming building management
One of the conference’s central themes focused on the rapid evolution of building control and monitoring tools. For Denis Ardouin, this transformation serves a major objective: to enable facility operators and property managers to better leverage data from technical equipment in order to improve the operational and energy performance of buildings.
This evolution is accompanied by new capabilities offered by digital platforms, whether for visualisation, analysis, or data sharing via the web, mobile apps, and, now, artificial intelligence. For integrators, the challenge also lies in enhancing interoperability between different systems to facilitate their deployment and operation.
The discussions also highlighted the emergence of Building Operating Systems (BOS) and the growing role of AI in the building sector. Advanced data analysis, decision support, anomaly detection, and optimisation of settings: these are all tools that today help facility operators in their daily tasks and sustainably improve infrastructure performance.
Beyond Compliance: Turning the BACS Decree and the Tertiary Decree into Performance Drivers
The conference also provided an opportunity to revisit the challenges associated with the BACS Decree and the Tertiary Decree, which are accelerating the digital and energy transformation of buildings.
While building management and monitoring solutions now incorporate numerous metrics for tracking regulatory requirements, Denis Ardouin emphasised that the success of a compliance initiative depends above all on a combination of various areas of expertise. At Equans Digital, the Facility Management teams ensure the availability and proper operation of technical equipment, while Energy Management experts support clients in tracking their energy goals and defining action plans aligned with regulatory requirements.
This approach is complemented by digital teams that analyse building data to identify opportunities for energy savings, optimise performance, and support decision-making. This work also requires continuous skill development among the teams to stay abreast of the latest advancements in management tools and ensure their optimal use throughout the buildings’ lifecycle.
Building Tomorrow's Sustainable Buildings Today
Denis Ardouin's presentation at the IBS trade show highlighted a strong conviction: the future of buildings depends on the convergence of control technologies, smart data utilisation, industry expertise, and artificial intelligence.
For property owners, operators, and asset managers, meeting the challenges posed by the BACS Decree, the Tertiary Sector Decree, and the energy transition now requires relying on connected infrastructure, high-performance digital tools, and specialists capable of transforming data into concrete actions.
At Equans Digital, this approach is now one of the cornerstones of the support we offer to players in the commercial, industrial, and infrastructure sectors to accelerate their transition toward more sustainable, efficient, and smart buildings.
